Come out and see the Tibetan Buddhist Monks of Gaden Shartse Monastery

By Rosalie Baker February 18, 2020

Placerville this year is fortunate to be the first stop for The Tibetan monks of Gaden Shartse, usually we are the last stop. If you have never come out and watch, you really should. My daughter and I came on the second day they were in town. The Monks were drawing out the design which is very intricate, they would measure, mark spots and draw all the lines.

My daughter and I went over to a table that was set up where we were able to try coloring with sand. We used a tool called a Chakpur to hold the sand and a simple nail to rube on the grooves of the Chakpur to create a vibration for the sand to come out. We chose to work on the circle Mandala  at the table, I held the chakpur while my daughter did the vibration. It really looks simple but there are techniques to make the sand art come out the best. As we found out the harder you vibrate, more sand comes out, the softer less sand comes out. Our pic the sand was bumpy, when the monks are done their mandala will be smooth. It took us about 4 hours to finish our mandala, my daughter was so focused doing it as she sung and worked at the same time. She definitely was in a meditation phase as she worked away. We stopped half way through to have a lunch break.

The Tibetan monks of Gaden Shartse are here to share the Buddha's teachings. To be of service to the world community by nurturing peace, harmony, compassion, and tolerance. There will be numerous Empowerment's, Lectures and workshops. The Mandalas have been in preparation for months to make this possible. Donations made will go towards  preserving Tibetan culture and educational supplies, teachers, buildings, maintenance, and outreach at Gaden Shartse Phukhang Monastery in the Tibetan Refugee Settlement at Mundgod, India.
